The Material Culture of Hunting

Hunting is a part of human history and culture. Its significance is well illustrated by the birth of the goddesses of the hunt in antiquity (Artemis in Ancient Greece and Diana in Ancient Rome). In the Middle Ages hunting was considered to be one of the "mechanical arts", along with weaving, blacksmithing, architecture, navigation, agriculture, theatre and medicine. Hunting has been a favourite topic in art since antiquity; its elaborate tools were prepared by the best craftsmen.

Artefacts and tools displayed in four rooms give us an insight into the culture of hunting. Objects are arranged in thematic units and follow chronological order. Elaborately carved weapons, hunting tools and pieces of fine art are displayed in an elegant interior. Tradition of hunting practiced by the aristocracy is recalled by a short movie as well as archive photographs.
