History of Huntsmanship

How has hunting become separated from military practice throughout history? How did sustainable, ethic hunting evolved from quest for food? Explore the exhibition to follow the development of hunting techniques and tools.

Hunting used to be a major source of food. With the domestication of dogs and the capture of birds animal-aided hunting began to develop. The role of hunting had changed over time. Instead of means of subsistence it had gradually become a form of physical exercise, training for war and leisure. Although hunting became a privilege of nobility, traditional ways of hunting were used by the peasantry as well. Hunting, as a prime activity of the aristocracy was practiced in well-kept game parks instead of primaeval woodland.

Hunting later became a regulated profession. First hunting laws were passed in the 19th century. National hunting societies and organizations were founded too.

In the 21st century hunting became an important issue in game management and nature conservation.
