The history of the museum
The Széchenyi Zsigmond Hunting Museum, a member institution of the Hungarian Museum of Natural History, opened its doors in 2014. It is the only museum in the Carpathian Basin and Central Europe that contains ethical hunting principles and modern, environmentally conscious knowledge related to sustainable hunting in the 21st century and publishes these with the most modern interactive tools. The space is provided by the Grassalkovich Castle building in Hatvan, where interactive, multimedia permanent exhibitions on natural science, hunting, fishing, angling and cultural history can be visited on 3 levels. The exhibitions are multi-layered in accordance with today's modern exhibition design principles, presenting the diversity of the topic with content and exhibition tools that suit the interests of different target groups and age groups. The visitor can gain insight into the traditions, achievements, and natural background of Hungarian hunting, hunting skills, and game management, admire the most important habitats and game species of the Carpathian Basin; the social embeddedness and cultural role of game management; the traditions and present of fishing and angling. The building will naturally also house an exhibition describing the history of the Grassalkovich Castle.
The main goal of the museum is environmental education, shaping the attitude of visitors, and educating them to behave environmentally conscious.
